On the Eve of the World Championships

After almost twenty years of competitive experience in canine disc and four trips to the Ashley Whippet Enterprises World Finals in Washington D.C., I have seen a wide variety of venues for disc dog competition.  Some have been better than others.  As the Executive Director of the IDDHA, I am proud to say that the field and facilities for the 2001 IDDHA Canine Disc World Championships are among the best I have ever seen.  The polo field is perfectly groomed, flat and covered with luscious grass – free of any obstruction.  The tenting area is spacious and completely secure for all the competitors and their dogs with plenty of shade and amenities.  Parking is ample and as close to the tenting area as can be desired and the weather in Georgia at the beginning of May is near perfect.  While the venue is ideal for the spectators, which are sure to fill the bleachers, the facilities are absolutely perfect for the competitors and their dogs.  Creating the optimal conditions for competition has been our primary focus and will certainly highlight what is sure to be a fantastic event.

Not only is this the first three day event in the history of canine disc which boasts the largest purse to-date, it is also one of the very few canine disc competitions that require pre-registration.  Pre-registration is a concept that is relatively new to canine disc but well founded in other canine related sports.  With over 80 entries and 35 disc dog teams registered from 8 states, the obvious success of the 2001 World Championship pre-registration is proof that many handlers are reaching a level of maturity that signals a serious commitment to participation in the most advanced levels of competition.

Lastly, I have only one regret about this event and that is that I will not be able to join in the Championships as a competitor.  While organizing competitions is not nearly the fun that competing is there is a profound reward in providing the means by which everyone can have so much fun.  I will surely enjoy watching all the play from the sidelines. Good luck to all the competitors and I look forward to seeing you all in May.

2001 IDDHA Ballot

Enclosed with this newsletter you will find a Director/Officer Nomination and Consent Form.  There will be an opening for one new director, which will potentially increase the IDDHA Board of Directors to five members in the year 2002. To reach the intended five board members, the membership must successfully produce a newly elected Director and a new President both of which will join the existing three IDDHA board members.  All nominating signatories as well as potential nominees must be a member of the Organization for a minium of two years in good standing and the same holds true for participating in the ballot as a voter.  Membership can be updated via the Internet or by snail mail anytime before the end of the third quarter of 2001 to participate in the ballot.

Completed Director/Officer Nomination and Consent Forms and proposals for inclusion in the ballot must be received no later than the end of the second quarter of 2001.

We look forward to your participation and input.
