Field Specifications and Layouts
General Field Specifications
Competitions that incorporate Distance, Single Disc, and Freestyle events require a playing field no less than 70x40 yards, of flat, level grass free of obstructions, holes, and other hazards.
To prevent interference by spectators, the field is partitioned from the spectators by fencing, ropes, or other devices.
The host of the competition surveys the playing field to ensure that it is flat, level and free of debris. Handlers are permitted to inspect the field before the competition begins.
An exit and entrance area is provided for the competitors.
A separate warm-up area and scheduled practice sessions are provided during competitions.
Some form of shelter from the sun should be available, either from shade trees or a manmade shelter.
Restroom facilities and a source of water should be made available to the competitors and spectators.
Distance Field Specifications
For Distance events, two Field Judges are positioned on opposite sides of the field and along the boundary lines. One Line Judge is positioned at the foul line.
For Distance events, the field is oriented so teams throw with a tail wind
Foul Line = Cones or yard markers are set at the 0 yard line, which is 25 yards wide. The foul line is chalked or painted.
Boundaries = Sidelines do not need to be chalked or painted; however, existing records can be marked along the boundaries of the Distance Field with cones or other devices.
Standard Single Disc Court Specifications
For Single Disc events, ideally, the field is laid out in two directions with the prevailing wind blowing across the field. This allows the teams to throw in either direction, but after time begins, a team is not permitted to change directions.
For Single Disc events, a Field Judge is positioned midway along the boundary of the field of play. One Line Judge is positioned at the foul line.
For a scaled version of the field of play, see Appendix A Standard Single Disc Court. The host chalks the following dimensions:
Foul Line = Cones or yard markers are set at the 0 yard line, which is 25 yards wide. The foul line is chalked or painted.
Boundaries = Each sideline is measured and chalked or painted to 50 yards.
Distance Measurements = Cones or yard markers are set and lines are chalked or painted at 10 yard increments, beginning at the 20 yard line. For Junior handlers and small dogs, a line should be chalked or painted at the handicap line (15 yards) for BDD titling. All measurements should be converted to the metric equivalent for events outside the United States. One meter = 39.37008 inches.

Bonus Area = The bonus area is measured from the 50 yard line, beginning five yards in from each boundary and extending to the center point of the foul line. The angle produced is approximately 24°. The farther the disc is thrown, the greater the area is for receiving bonus points. The size of the sweet spot bonus area increases as the distance from the foul line increases. The following percentages apply:
20-30 yards = 30%
30-40 yards = 42%
40-50 yards = 54%
For Freestyle events, the field must be no less than 30x30 yards with space at the midpoint of one sideline reserved for the Judge(s) as well as for the entrance and exit of competitors.
The Judges, Secretaries, and handlers attend a meeting before the event to verify that everyone understands their role during the competition.
Judges who are actively participating in a competition cannot compete.
Secretaries are not permitted to enter a class in which they are serving as the timekeeper or scorekeeper.
Only judges who are recognized by the IDDHA can judge classes for Freestyle titling and Championship events.
The judge is responsible for scoring the performance, and the judges decision on scoring is final.
The purse for the Championship is determined by the total amount of event entry fees and by corporate and private sponsorship, if applicable. For the Overall Championship in all divisions, trophies, medallions, and/or rosettes are awarded for the 1st through the 8th place.
