Double Shot

At the 2007 World Championships in Indianapolis the IDDHA debuted an innovative new event, Double Shot. It was a huge success and we look forward playing it again this September at the 2008 World Championships at Purina Farms just outside of St. Louis.

Double Shot is a timed event.  Using a traditional single disc field layout with minor modifications, the handler must remain behind the foul line and time starts when the dog crosses the line for the first throw.  Using three discs, the team must succeed in two catches, one at 30 yards and another at 40 yards in that order (20 and 30 for novice).  After the last catch, the dog must be return a disc across the foul line to stop time.  For a catch to count, the dog must have at least one paw in the correct zone at the time of the catch or upon landing after the catch.  There is a time limit of 1 minute.

In an effort to prevent injury to the dogs, we strongly recommend that handlers do not throw a disc directly at a dog already waiting in the field. This is of particular concern when there is a miss and the third disc is utilized. The handler should attempt to throw to one side of the dog or the other in this situation so that the dog can catch the disc as they travel perpindicular to the flight of the disc to better absorb the impact. The judges will call a "no catch" if the handler throws a disc directly at the dog in an unsafe manner.
