IDDHA Wraps Up Its Fourth Successful Year

As the International Disc Dog Handlers’ Association heads into the last quarter of its fourth year and the end of 2001 disc dog season, the organization has much to celebrate.  The IDDHA disc dog registry has exceeded 200 handlers and has registered close to 300 disc dogs.  The Association’s treasury has a healthy surplus and the number of events held by licensed IDDHA event organizers is on the increase.  Along with the minor alterations to the IDDHA Rules and Regulations prescribed by the results of the 2001 IDDHA Ballot, the IDDHA will experience two exciting changes in 2002.

First, the IDDHA would like to announce the addition of a new board member.  Andrew Mouser, of the California Canine Discmasters has been an IDDHA member since 1998.  Mouser was nominated for the position and unanimously approved by members of the board.  Mouser’s term as an IDDHA Board Member will commence officially at the annual meeting to be held in November.  Mouser’s dedication and commitment to the IDDHA is evident in his tireless maintenance of the website and has resulted in significant growth in the membership in Southern California through weekly titling matches held in conjunction with local kennel clubs.  Mouser owns K9Sports.com, a website devoted to dog sports.  K9Sports.com is a licensed IDDHA event organizer and has sponsored many IDDHA sanctioned disc dog contests across the country, including the Iron Dog series.  Congratulations, Andrew, the IDDHA welcomes you and your enthusiasm.

Second, after producing the 2000 Freestyle Championships in Del Mar, California and the 2001 Canine Disc World Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, the IDDHA will seek to bring this annual event to different parts of the country.  Furthermore, the IDDHA will offer the production of the 2002 Championships to the most qualified event organizer interested in hosting the event.  The IDDHA guarantees a minimum of $3,000 toward the cost of organizing the 2002 Championships and will provide additional assistance in the form of banners, insurance and web support.  For more information or to submit a proposal, please email iddha@aol.com.

The 2002 disc dog season will bring many positive changes for the IDDHA.  The Association will experience continued growth in the disc dog registry, increased participation in IDDHA Titling, Testing and Ranking programs and a greater number of sanctioned IDDHA events.  The IDDHA would like to thank the membership and everyone who has supported and participated in IDDHA activities.

IDDHA Website News

We’ve been making changes to the IDDHA Website and more are to come.  Recently, we’ve added some enhancements that you’ve probably seen such as real-time Rankings that are updated as the database is updated.  A new online tally entry allows IDDHA Reps to enter scores and information into the database instead of mailing them in.

Additional improvements planned include;

·     Enhanced member interface that will allow members to update their personal information online and to check on titling legs and scores that have been submitted.

·     Enhanced IDDHA Rep interface that will allow Reps to view historical data of information        submitted.

·     Dynamic content so that various sections and pages on the IDDHA Website will be updated automatically from contributors via a web interface.

·     A completely new events calendar where members and event organizers can enter comprehensive data directly into the calendar, which can be sorted and displayed in different views.

These enhancements and more will be added over time so keep up with the changes by visiting  http://www.iddha.com frequently.

The 2001 IDDHA Ballot

For the first time, the IDDHA Annual Ballot was conducted via the internet.  This new system utilizing Yahoo Polls was effective, cost efficient and, after the initial sign-in “rigmarole”, fairly easy to use.  Participation in the ballot was higher than it has been in the past but there is still room for improvement.  This is an area that we will continue to promote and develop, as it will improve the quality of the IDDHA’s representation of the sport.

Below, you will find a list of the changes to the IDDHA Rules and Regulations to be implemented at the beginning of the 2002 Disc Dog Season:

1. On section 3.1, page 4, of the IDDHA Rules and Regulations, Remove "collars" from the sentence; "No leashes, collars, food, or other aids are permitted on the field during competitions."

2.  Currently, the small dog 5-yard handicap is only at the BDD level.  Change all single disc dog title levels (BDD, ADD, MDD) to have the same - 5-yard handicap for dogs less than 15 inches.  This would be (in order of titles); 15, 25, and 35 yards.

3.  On section 3.1, page 4, of the IDDHA Rules and Regulations, change "If the competing dog relieves itself on the field of play, time does not stop while the field is cleaned." to "If the competing dog relieves itself on the field of play, the dog is disqualified (DQ)."

4.  In the second paragraph in Chapter 5, page 11, change "Ranking for registered dogs is updated and posted quarterly at the IDDHA web site: www.iddha.com." to "Ranking for registered dogs is updated and posted within 14 days at the IDDHA web site: www.iddha.com."

5.  In section 3.4, under the heading Championship Single Disc Court Specifications subheading Bonus Area change the angle of the "sweet spot" to 15 degrees rather than 24.

6.  In section 3.1, add a stipulation to the rule concerning disruptions, which reads, "Improper timing of a freestyle routine is grounds for a protest and a rerun can be offered to the team at the discretion of the head judge."

7.  In section 7.1, change the first paragraph of Disc Dog Registration to read, "Registered dogs can test and title and are eligible to compete for the Overall Championship. However, non-members neither receive the quarterly newsletter, nor are they eligible for ranking or to become a Judge or an IDDHA Representative."

8.  In section 5.2, add the following paragraph; "Top 10 rankings are qualified with minimum throws based on quarterly adjustments.  First Quarter requires a minimum of 20 throws for the year.  Second quarter requires a minimum of 30 throws for the year. Third Quarter requires a minimum of 40 throws for the year.  Fourth Quarter requires a minimum of 50 throws for the year.

Only one measure in the 2001 ballot did not pass.

1.  In section 3.1, add a stipulation to the rule concerning disruptions, which reads, "If the music is interrupted during a freestyle routine time continues to run. This interruption does NOT constitute a valid disruption and grounds for a protest."

Membership Renewal

Yearly membership can be renewed as early as the beginning of October.  Membership renewals received after October 1 will apply toward the following year.  As stipulated in the 2001 Ballot and beginning with the 2002 disc dog season, only teams with current memberships will be eligible for    IDDHA ranking.  For easy online renewal please visit http://www.iddha.com/Registration4.htm.

IDDHA Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the IDDHA membership is scheduled for Saturday November 17 at 4:30 PM. The location has not yet been decided; however, it will be held in the Atlanta Area.  The location will be announced soon via the website and the IDDHA listserv.

Clip-its!

“Joe The Clip-it Guy” (yes, that is how he refers to himself) has generously provided the IDDHA with samples of his product, the Clip-it.  Clip-It allows you to bring your disc along without the hassle of carrying it around.  Just snap your disc in and it's securely and comfortably held at your side. You can find more information about the Clip-it at http://community-2.webtv.net/Clip-It/DiscClip.  Joe would love to have some feedback on his product.  If anyone is interested in writing a review for him, we’re certain he would appreciate it! He can be reached at Clip-It@webtv.net

Enjoy!
