Scoring and Ranking
To be recognized for IDDHA Ranking in both Single Disc and Freestyle events, a dog must be registered with the IDDHA Disc Dog Registry before exhibition. See IDDHA Disc Dog Registration/IDDHA Membership Application.
Teams are ranked for Single Disc and Freestyle events based on performance in competition during the disc dog season that starts January 1 and ends December 31. Ranking for registered dogs is updated and posted quarterly at the IDDHA web site.
For IDDHA Single Disc and Freestyle Ranking, scores must be recorded on IDDHA Competition Tally Sheet by recognized IDDHA representatives and sent to the IDDHA for validation. IDDHA Reps can apply for an Online Tally Submission Account.
The IDDHA Competition Tally Sheet must specify the IDDHA handlers names; dogs names; IDDHA numbers; all relevant scores; total number of competitors; placement within a class/division (Freestyle only); and the IDDHA Representatives name, number, and signature.
The IDDHA Competition Tally Sheets must be submitted within thirty days of the event or at the end of the quarter, whichever comes first.
Single Disc Ranking
Because of the emphasis on accuracy, IDDHA Single Disc Ranking eliminates any gender-based strength advantage; nearly "levels" the playing field for all sizes of dogs; and most importantly, allows the IDDHA to recognize almost all single disc events for Single Disc ranking purposes.
If the event meets all of the following four criteria, it qualifies for Single Disc ranking:
The event utilizes a single disc.
The handler is required to throw from a designated area.
Throws and catches are measured.
Results are recorded.
Ranking for Single Disc events is based on the catching percentage for each team.
Only catches over 20 yards are counted towards a teams catching percentage.
Single Disc ranking is determined by results submitted and recorded over the period of the disc dog season.
Freestyle Ranking and Scoring
IDDHA Freestyle Ranking is possible at ANY freestyle canine disc competition, regardless of judging criteria and/or contest format. Ranking is based on how many competitors a team beats in freestyle competition. For example, in a competition with 20 competitors, finishing 1st receives 19 points; 2nd receives 18 points; 3rd receives 17 points; 4th place receives 16 points; etc.
A Freestyle competition must have at least 5 competitors to be valid for Freestyle Ranking.
In the case that a Competition Tally Sheet is not submitted, handlers have the option of completing Appendix F IDDHA Freestyle Ranking Form and submitting it with the appropriate signatures to the IDDHA within 45 days of a competition or by the end of the quarter, whichever comes first.
Teams must attend a minimum of 5 events in the Open division, or the equivalent, to be considered for Freestyle ranking at the end of the season.
Freestyle Judging Criteria and Scoring Procedures
The Freestyle judging criteria used in Sanctioned IDDHA Freestyle events is designed to accurately quantify the freestyle performances of disc dog teams during competition. A panel of three judges evaluates and scores the individual skills in each Skill Class to derive the scores. Scoring is based on the subjective observation of a teams Artistic Impression and Technical Ability.
The Individual Elements in each Skill Class receive a maximum score of 2.5 with variation to 1/10 of a point.
Each of the three Skill Classes receives a maximum of 10 points.
The lowest scores from the Combined Skill Class are dropped because teams receive points for only the 4 highest of the 7 Interactive Elements. For a complete listing of skill classes and descriptions, see IDDHA Freestyle Judging Criteria and Score Sheet.
For the Championship Final Heat only, the teams are scored on the highest 5 of the 7 Interactive Elements in the Combined Skills Class.
To determine the winner, the Scorekeeper calculates the Averaged Cumulative from IDDHA Freestyle Judging Criteria and Score Sheet for each team.
The Averaged Cumulative, which has a variation to 1/100 of a point, determines the results of the Freestyle event.
Championship Tiebreakers
To break ties in Championship competition, the following rules apply:
Distance The longest throw out of all the heats breaks the tie.
Single Disc To break a tie, the teams progress through the following conditions until a winner is declared:
1. Most catches.
2. Most catches off the ground.
3. Throw-off with the winner being determined by the most catches in 60 seconds.
Freestyle The winner is the team with the higher Combined Skills score in the Championship Final Round.
In the event that these tiebreakers fail to identify a higher placed competitor, the teams will remain tied. As necessary, they will share equally appropriate honors, prize money, and other prizes.
Championship Standings
Each event in the Overall Championship is designated 100 points. The winner of each event receives 100 points. The scale of points awarded to the other competitors is based on how many entrants there are in the division/class divided into 100. For instance, if 20 teams are registered in the Open division of the Single Disc class, then 1st place would receive 100 points, 2nd would receive 95 points, 3rd would receive 90 points, and so on.
Fractions are rounded to the nearest whole point.
Points are accumulated over the course of the Championships and tabulated at the end to determine the final standings.
Overall Year-End Ranking
Performance and rank in both Single Disc and Freestyle events over the disc dog season determine the Overall Year-End Ranking and is only assigned to Open division teams. The following rules apply:
To be considered for Overall Year-End Ranking, teams must compete in a minimum of 5 events.
To be eligible for Overall Year-End Ranking, teams are required to attend and compete in the Single Disc and Freestyle events of that years IDDHA Canine Disc World Championships.
